Zanzibar
Zanzibar is a beautiful archipelago located off the coast of mainland Tanzania in the Indian Ocean. It is made up of two main islands—Unguja (commonly referred to as Zanzibar) and Pemba—along with several smaller islets. Known for its white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and rich cultural heritage, Zanzibar is one of Africa’s top island destinations.
The island offers a unique blend of African, Arab, Indian, and European influences, especially evident in Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stone Town is famous for its narrow winding streets, historic buildings, bustling markets, and cultural landmarks like the Sultan’s Palace and the Old Fort.
Zanzibar is a haven for beach lovers, divers, and snorkelers. The surrounding coral reefs offer some of the best marine experiences in East Africa. Popular beach areas include Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje, and Jambiani.
The island is also known for its spice farms, giving it the nickname “The Spice Island.” Visitors can take guided spice tours to learn about and taste cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and other aromatic spices.
Zanzibar is accessible by ferry or flight from Dar es Salaam and is often combined with safaris on the mainland for a perfect beach-and-bush holiday experience.
