Mkomazi National Park
Mkomazi National Park is located in northeastern Tanzania, near the Kenyan border, and covers an area of about 3,245 square kilometers. It lies at the base of the Pare and Usambara Mountains and offers stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro to the northwest.
The park is known for its semi-arid savannah landscape, open grasslands, and acacia woodlands. Mkomazi is a vital sanctuary for endangered species, especially the black rhino and African wild dog, which are protected in special breeding programs within the park. It is also home to elephants, giraffes, zebras, elands, hartebeests, buffaloes, and various antelope species.
Birdlife is abundant in Mkomazi, with over 450 recorded species, making it a great destination for birdwatchers. The park is less crowded compared to other parks in Tanzania, offering a peaceful and off-the-beaten-path safari experience.
Mkomazi can be accessed from Moshi, Same, or Arusha, and is often combined with visits to nearby attractions like Mount Kilimanjaro and the Usambara Mountains.
