Mahale Mountains National Park

Mahale Mountains National Park is located in western Tanzania, along the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika. It covers an area of about 1,613 square kilometers and is one of the most remote and pristine parks in the country. The park is dominated by the Mahale Mountain range, with Mount Nkungwe being the highest peak at 2,462 meters.

Mahale is best known for its wild chimpanzee population. It is one of the best places in the world to observe chimpanzees in their natural habitat, with guided treks available to track habituated groups. The park also hosts other primates, such as red colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and vervet monkeys, as well as a variety of birds and forest wildlife.

Access to the park is by boat or small aircraft, making the journey part of the adventure. The setting is incredibly scenic, with dense tropical forests, sandy beaches, and the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika offering opportunities for swimming, kayaking, and snorkeling.

Mahale Mountains National Park offers a rare and unforgettable experience for nature lovers, especially those interested in primates and off-the-beaten-path travel.
