Hiking Oldonyo Lengai is situated on the way to the national parks in northern Tanzania,
just at the foot of Rift Valley. Located on the way to Ngorongoro and Serengeti, it is an ideal resting place for most safari travelers.

Tour Plan

Day 01:
  • Depart from Arusha or Moshi in the morning and drive to Lake Natron (Ngare Sero), with a stop for lunch in Mtu-wa Mbu (Lake Manyara). This drive is about 8 hours.
  • Arrive at your campsite in Ngare Sero and relax for the afternoon.
  • Enjoy a delicious dinner prepared by your camp staff.
Day 02:
  • Wake up very early in the morning (around 1:00 am) and have a light breakfast.
  • Begin the hike to the summit of Oldonyo Lengai. The hike is challenging, with a steep ascent of 1,600 meters over 5 kilometers. However, the views from the top are incredible, and you will be rewarded with stunning vistas of the surrounding landscape, including the Great Rift Valley and Lake Natron.
  • Reach the summit in time for sunrise and enjoy the spectacular views.
  • Spend some time exploring the crater and learning about the unique volcanic activity of Oldonyo Lengai. The volcano is the only active natrocarbonatite volcano in the world, and its lava is black and fluid when molten, but cools to a dark, glassy obsidian.
  • Begin the descent back down to the base of the mountain.
  • Arrive back at your campsite in Ngare Sero in the afternoon and enjoy a refreshing shower.
  • Have dinner and relax for the evening.
Day 03:
  • Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your campsite.
  • Visit Lake Natron, a flamingo breeding ground, and see the thousands of pink birds that call this lake home.
  • Depart from Lake Natron and drive back to Arusha or Moshi.

Things to keep in mind:

  • The hike to Oldonyo Lengai is challenging and requires a good level of fitness.
  • The hike is also a night hike, so be sure to bring warm clothes and a headlamp.
  • You will need to obtain a permit to hike Oldonyo Lengai. Permits can be obtained from the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) office in Arusha.
  • It is important to be respectful of the Maasai people who live in the area around Oldonyo Lengai.
